The Hori Hori knife originated in Japan in 1876, when the Meiji government officially banned the manufacturing of katanas, so swordsmiths switched to making Hori Hori knives to make a living. In the beginning, the Hori-Hori knife was called the Sansai knife, as it was used to excavate Sansai and harvest vegetables from the mountains.
