More on the Product
What is Siwak/Miswak?
Traditionally Miswak is used as a pencil-sized stick 15 to 20 cm long with a diameter of 1 to 1.5cm from Arak (Salvadora persica) or the Toothbrush tree. Here it is offered in powder form. It’s chemical composition makes it highly effective at controlling plaque and each of it’s other components has some specific role in oral health.
Silica acts as abrasive material that removes stains and deposits from the tooth surface. Sodium bicarbonate has mild abrasive and germicidal effect. Tannic acid has astringent effect on mucus membrane and found to be good anti-plaque and anti-gingivitis. Resins serve a physical function and form a layer over the enamel which protects it from microbial action. Alkaloids show bactericidal effect and stimulate the gingiva. Essential oils have anti-septic effect and stimulate the flow of saliva. Vitamin C helps in healing and repair. Calcium and fluoride ions promote remineralisation of tooth structure and have mild anti bacterial action.
Why Activated Charcoal?
Activated charcoal is not the same substance as that found in charcoal bricks or burnt pieces of food. The manufacture of activated charcoal makes it extremely adsorbent. Unlike absorbent substances, activated charcoal’s adsorbent nature allows it to bind to atoms, molecules, toxins and odours, rather than soaking (absorbing) them up. Because of its ability to bind to toxins, some people swear by activated charcoal’s ability to eliminate tooth stains and whiten teeth.
